PROPERTY prices in parts of Boscombe are now outstripping those in Bournemouth town centre, new research has revealed.
The area has been blighted in the past by a reputation for drugs and crime but the rejuvenated seafront and surf reef are attracting families and investors.
The research was carried out by one of the six companies competing for the council contract to redevelop the town centre.
Stephen Godsall, the council’s head of major projects, reported the finding to a meeting of the town centre business forum.
The area has benefited from £3.4 million in grant funding and the Boscombe Spa project, which created the surf reef, rebuilt the seafront and pier, and built 169 new flats.
Mark Reed, of Christchurch based estate Bentley Reeds, said: “Flat prices in Boscombe are certainly growing.
“It does apply more to the area around the surf reef. There are parts of Boscombe which aren’t going to outstrip the town centre.”
He said the number of bars and restaurants in the town centre meant some parts are “too lively” for some potential residents.
Cllr Lisa Northover, of Boscombe West, said: “The perception of Boscombe is certainly changing – I keep meeting people who have moved here from London with their families.
“They know the area has problems but the facilities are great – the seafront is amazing.
“When I am in the town centre and want to have lunch, I struggle to find the kind of quality, independent places you get in Boscombe.”
Council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin said: “I think the Boscombe news reflects that when council and business work together we can make a real difference.
“In many ways, the regeneration of Boscombe, particularly the seafront, is a microcosm of what we hope to achieve in Bournemouth.”
